Maxon ships Cinema 4D 2023

Maxon’s launch video for its Fall 2022 updates. The section on Cinema 4D 2023 starts here.

Maxon has released Cinema 4D 2023, its latest update to the 3D animation software.

The update adds GPU-accelerated soft body physics to Cinema 4D’s Unified Simulation System, a new symmetry modelling system, support for OpenColorIO, and updated the software’s GoZ bridge to ZBrush.

The release is part of a series of Fall 2022 updates to Maxon’s software, which also includes new versions of the Red Giant effects plugins, and its mobile apps Forger and Moves by Maxon.

At the time of writing, Maxon has only just released the online documentation for Cinema 4D 2023, so we’ll update this story with more details once we’ve been able to go through it properly.

Would have been Cinema 4D R27 under the previous version numbering system
The first obvious change about Cinema 4D 2023 is the version number, since with the update, Maxon has switched to Autodesk-style annual versioning.

Under the previous numbering system, it would have been Cinema 4D R27, with the ‘R’ denoting that it was available as an upgrade for perpetual licence holders, unlike the subscription-only ‘S’ releases.

At the time of writing, the only perpetual licence listed in Maxon’s online store is Cinema 4D R25.

We’ve contacted Maxon to ask whether the new version will be available as a perpetual licence, or as an upgrade for existing perpetual licence holders, and will update if we hear back.

New integrated, GPU-accelerated soft body physics system
Key features in the release include full support for soft body physics within the new unified simulation framework introduced in Cinema 4D S26, and previously restricted to cloth and ropes.

Soft bodies can interact with other objects in the scene controlled by the framework, and simulations can be combined with keyframe animation: a workflow Maxon calls ‘mixed animation’.

According to Maxon, the new soft body system – which is GPU-accelerated – is also significantly faster than the old Bullet-physics-based system.

Other key features in Cinema 4D 2023
You can see the other key changes in Cinema 4D 2023 below, based on the summary in Maxon’s blog post. We’ll be updating this story with more details once we’ve gone through the online documentation.

  • New procedural workflows
Vertex Maps and Vertex Color tags controlled by Fields now work on most generators.
  • Modelling with Symmetry
Allows mirrored changes on the model. Users can define the symmetry using the world grid, the object axis, a custom workplane, or even the topology of the model.
  • OpenColorIO support
Includes ACEScg color space. Provides a unified color pipeline across all Maxon tools, including Redshift.
  • Watch Folders in the asset browser
Allows the storage of assets anywhere on the file system.
  • Improved GoZ bridge
Lets artists more easily transfer models between Cinema 4D and ZBrush.

Pricing and availability
Cinema 4D 2023 is available for Windows 10+ and macOS 10.15.7+. Subscriptions cost $94/month or $719/year. We’ve contacted Maxon to confirm whether perpetual licences are still available.
