Pilgway has released 3DCoatPrint, a new free version of 3DCoat for creating models for 3D printing.

The free edition is licensed for commercial use, and contains all of the sculpting tools from 3DCoat, but reduces the polygon count of exported models to a maximum of 40,000 triangles on export.

A new free edition of 3DCoat with all of the software’s sculpting and rendering features
Pilgway has created editions of 3DCoat tailored towards creating 3D models for printing before: 3DCprinting was a similarly cut-down version, and used to sell for $49 before it was discontinued in 2021.

Like its predecessor, 3DCoatPrint includes all of the sculpting features from its parent software, making it possible to create models using a clay-like voxel sculpting workflow.

Interestingly, it is also possible to import and view medical scan data in DICOM format, although Pilgway’s email newsletter stresses that the software is not intended for medical use.

Users can export models in WRL and STL formats, although export resolution is capped at 40,000 triangles, with 3DCoatPrint automatically decimating the mesh on export if necessary, and smoothing it for printing.

3DCoatPrint also includes 3DCoat’s rendering features, making it possible to generate test renders and promotional imagery, but not 3DCoat’s other workspaces, like its paint and retopology toolsets.

Pricing and system requirements
3DCoatPrint is available free for Windows 7-10, Ubuntu 20.04+ Linux and macOS 10.15+. At the time of writing, the current release is 3DCoatPrint 2022.34.
