Blender 3.1 ships
The Blender Foundation has shipped Blender 3.1, the latest version of the open-source 3D software.
It’s a performance-focused update, with speed boosts to toolsets ranging from procedural modelling and scene layout to rigging and animation, and from rendering to file export.
Highlights include a new Metal backend for Cycles improving render speeds by up to 1.7x on M1 Macs, and GPU support in the Subdivision Surface modifier accelerating viewport playback of character animation.
Other key changes include the option to render point clouds in Cycles, a further 19 new nodes in the Geometry Nodes system, and better outline rendering and colour filling in the Grease Pencil toolset.
We’ll be updating this story with more details of the new features shortly, so check back for updates.
System requirements
Blender 3.1 is available for Windows 8.1+, macOS 10.13+ and Linux. It’s a free download.
