Luxion unveils KeyShot 11

Luxion unveils KeyShot 11

Tuesday, January 25th, 2022 | Posted by Jim Thacker

Luxion has unveiled KeyShot 11, a major update to its rendering and technical animation software that introduces new 3D paint and physics capabilities, and a CMF management system.

On the release of KeyShot 11 in February 2022, all new licences of the software will be sold as subscriptions, with entry-level edition KeyShot HD replaced by a new subscription-only product, KeyShot Personal Edition.

New physics, 3D painting and CMF capabilities
Major new features in KeyShot 11 include a rigid body dynamics system, which Luxion says was used to create all of the simulations in the teaser video embedded above.

According to the firm, users will be able to “animate falling, sliding and bouncing objects entirely in KeyShot”, but it will not be possible to simulate soft body dynamics.

Other changes listed on Luxion’s website include a new 3D painting system, CMF (Colour Material Finish) management, and – for users of the Pro edition and upwards – a new KeyShot Web Viewer, for publishing and sharing KeyShot files online, and improved headless rendering.

Sales of perpetual licences to be discontinued, along with KeyShot HD
In addition, Luxion has announced that on the release of KeyShot 11, it is ending sales of perpetual licences of the software, with all new licences of the software sold as subscriptions.

Existing perpetual licences will remain valid, but users will not be able to access new subscription-only features, including the new KeyShot Web Viewer.

Luxion is also discontinuing KeyShot HD, the old entry-level edition, in favour of KeyShot Personal Edition, a subscription product described as a “more basic version of KeyShot for freelancers and individual users”.

Personal Edition users will be limited to installing KeyShot on one machine at a time, not three; and will not be able to install add-on modules, required to use the KeyShot Web Viewer, and for network rendering.

The Personal Edition will be supported only via Luxion’s forum, and will not receive phone or email support.

Pricing and availability
KeyShot 11 is due to ship in February 2022. Luxion hasn’t announced pricing or system requirements.

The current stable release, KeyShot 10.2, is available for 64-bit Windows 8+ and macOS 10.13+. Integration plugins are available for a range of DCC and CAD tools, including 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, Maya and ZBrush.

A new licence of the base HD edition costs $995; the Pro edition costs $1,995. An Enterprise licence, which includes the KeyShotWeb and network rendering add-ons, costs $3,995. See a comparison table here.
