Gnomon Workshop has released Cinematic Production Techniques Using the Unreal Engine Sequencer, a detailed guide to creating game cinematics in Unreal Engine.

The workshop, recorded by Bill Buckley, animation director at First Contact Entertainment, also uses Maya for character animation, and Premiere Pro for rendering the edit offline.

A detailed guide to creating game cinematics in Unreal Engine and Maya
Over the course of five hours of video training, Buckley guides viewers through the entire process of creating a cinematic using the Sequencer toolset in Unreal Engine.

He begins by discussing how to assess the needs of a project to establish the shots required, before revealing how to block out establishing shots at game level, keeping cinematic principles in mind.

Buckley then brings a character into the game level to create hero shots for the cinematic, setting out a pipeline for animating in Maya while simultaneously updating the scene in the Unreal Editor.

The process uses Epic Games’ Animation and Rigging Toolset, available as a free download.

The training concludes by compiling all of the shots in Unreal Engine, then rendering the frames of the final edit offline in Premiere Pro.
